Four arrested in Gujarat for using AI deepfakes to commit Aadhaar and banking fraud

Four people have been arrested in Gujarat for using artificial intelligence and deepfake technology to bypass biometric security systems and carry out identity-based financial fraud.

According to investigators, the gang used AI tools, including Gemini and Meta AI, to create deepfake videos with realistic eye-blink animations using victims’ images and personal data.

Police said the accused projected these AI-generated videos during verification procedures to fool liveness detection systems and gain unauthorised access to update mobile numbers linked to victims’ Unique Identification Authority of India Aadhaar profiles through Common Service Center kits.

Once the linked mobile numbers were changed, the gang took control of accounts connected to platforms such as DigiLocker and various banking services.

Investigators said the accused then received one-time passwords directly on their own devices, allowing them to open fraudulent accounts with banks including IDFC FIRST Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Jio Payments Bank.

The group also secured personal loans through lending platforms, including RKBansal, True Credits, and EarlySalary, leaving victims burdened with debt.

The arrested accused have been identified as Kanubhai Parmar, Ashish Valand, Mohammad Kaif Patel, and Deep Gupta. Police said the suspects come from varied educational backgrounds, including business administration and information technology studies. They are currently in judicial custody while investigations continue to identify other members of the network.

Following the case, Ahmedabad Police launched an Aadhaar security awareness campaign, urging citizens to lock their biometric data using the mAadhaar app or the official UIDAI website.

Authorities also advised people to use masked Aadhaar copies, avoid sharing OTPs, and stay cautious of suspicious links related to KYC updates or Aadhaar verification.
