Five accused in Zubeen Garg death case sent to 14-day judicial custody

A court in Guwahati on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of five accused in the case related to the death of singer-composer Zubeen Garg by another 14 days.

The accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma, Sandipan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya — were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court via video conferencing from Baksa district jail. None of them have applied for bail yet.

The five were earlier remanded to judicial custody on October 15 and transferred to Baksa jail amid heavy security following violent protests in the area.

Two other individuals — Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta, both members of Garg’s band — were sent to judicial custody on October 16 and lodged in Haflong prison in Dima Hasao district.

Zubeen Garg drowned while swimming during a yacht party in Singapore on September 19. Investigators have so far recorded statements from nine of the eleven people who accompanied the singer abroad. Another individual is expected to arrive in Guwahati soon for questioning.

Siddharth Sharma, Garg’s manager, and Shyamkanu Mahanta, the festival organiser who arranged the Singapore event, have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Authorities uncovered suspicious transactions worth over ₹1.1 crore in the accounts of Garg’s personal security officers, which investigators believe may be linked to the case.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues to analyse financial records and other circumstantial evidence as the probe moves forward.
