First case for providing false information in SIR registered in UP

Lucknow: Rampur district has reported the first case of providing false information in an SIR form, as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls continues across Uttar Pradesh under strict Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines.

The incident came to light when a woman allegedly filled and submitted the enumeration forms on behalf of her two sons — Aamir and Danish — who have been residing abroad in Dubai and Kuwait for several years. She is also accused of forging their signatures. The irregularity was detected during digitisation of the forms by the Booth Level Officer (BLO).

On discovery, Rampur District Magistrate Ajay Kumar Dwivedi ordered the registration of an FIR against all three individuals under relevant legal provisions. Dwivedi said the SIR exercise is being conducted with “seriousness and complete transparency” across all assembly constituencies in Rampur.

“During digitisation of forms received in Part No 248 of Assembly Constituency 37 (Rampur), such a case came to light,” he stated.

According to the DM, Noor Jahan, mother of the two voters, submitted the forms in their names while concealing the fact that they no longer reside in Rampur, constituting a serious violation of election rules. As per ECI norms, voters may only submit enumeration forms from the place of their ordinary residence. Providing false information, concealing facts, or maintaining dual entries is punishable under law.

Authorities clarified that individuals who have mistakenly submitted forms from two places may still reverse one entry by contacting their BLO. However, deliberate violations will face strict legal action.

Urging cooperation, Dwivedi appealed to voters to provide accurate and updated details during the revision process and avoid false declarations to uphold electoral integrity.

According to data released by the Election Commission on Saturday afternoon, Uttar Pradesh — with an electorate base of 15.44 crore — has distributed 99.93 per cent of enumeration forms and digitised 94.04 per cent so far.
