Fire breaks out at AIIMS hospital in Delhi, no injuries reported

New Delhi: At least 34 fire tenders were rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) late on Wednesday night after a massive fire broke out at the hospital's conversion building.

No loss of life or injuries have been reported so far, meanwhile, efforts are underway to douse the flames. According to reports, it was a no-patients wing with only laboratories.

The fire department said the incident took place at 10.22 pm and 22 fire fighting vehicles reached the spot to contain the blaze. The fire broke out on the roof of the ninth floor of the building.

"Twenty-two fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to douse the flames," an official said.

Atul Garg, Director, Delhi Fire Services, said that the fire spread to other parts due to the equipment on the roof. The fire was controlled within 30-40 minutes.

Asked about the cause of the blaze, the official said it is too early to assess the reason.

Sources said the fire spread to the adjacent Emergency Lab in the department of Lab Medicine, which is adjacent to the Microbiology department's virology unit, where electricity work was going on for some time and cables being used were kept, they said.

The emergency services in the hospital were also affected due to the blaze.
