Mumbai police have registered an FIR against Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi for allegedly making remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and commenting on temples during his era, which reportedly hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. He also claimed that “the ruling party wants to destroy Muslims in the country.”
According to police officials, the complaint was filed by a social worker affiliated with the Shiv Sena at a police station in Thane. However, as the remarks were made during an interview on the premises of the state legislative building, the investigation was later transferred to the Marine Drive police in Mumbai.
The complainant stated that he was watching the news around 7:30 pm on Monday when he saw Azmi, the MLA from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar, describing Aurangzeb as an excellent administrator and claiming that India was referred to as “sone ki chidiya” (golden bird) during his reign. He further alleged that Azmi asserted India’s GDP was 24 percent during Aurangzeb’s rule, which, according to him, was a key reason for the British coming to India.
