FIR against cop in Karnataka student suicide case for dereliction of duty

Police sources informed on Monday that the Karnataka police have registered an FIR against eight persons, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector Shivaraj in connection with the alleged suicide of a college student in Channapattana village in Mysuru. The police officer was named in the FIR filed with the Hullahalli police station for dereliction of duty and ignoring the plight of the complainant after she lodged a complaint with the police seeking action against the accused. The other seven named in the FIR are Suresh, Gurumallu, Lokesh, Jademallaiah, Mallikarjunaiah, Gowramma and Rajamma.

Shobha was in love with one of the accused, namely Lokesh. He developed physical intimacy with her promising marriage but then started distancing himself on the pretext that she spoke to another Suresh from the same village of Hullahalli where the two hailed from. He then moved to Bangalore and cut off ties with her.

Shobha then filed a complaint with the Hullahalli police station for cheating. Enraged at this, Lokesh and his family visited her residence and quarrelled with her parents. They allegedly abused both Shobha and her parents, and unable to bear the humiliation, she died by suicide on October 5. In her suicide note recovered by her parents eleven days after her death, she sought the death penalty for Lokesh for allegedly cheating on her. Suresh, also named in the FIR, has been accused of threatening her in the note. Further investigations in the case are underway.
