New Delhi: The appellate court in Qatar has decided to commute the death sentences of eight former Indian Navy officers, who were earlier convicted on alleged espionage charges.
The court's decision comes weeks after the Indian government fervently appealed against the harsh penalties imposed on the individuals.
The Ministry of External Affairs in India issued a statement acknowledging the verdict and expressing cautious optimism. While the specific details of the court order are eagerly awaited, the Indian government noted that the sentences have been reduced and emphasized its commitment to providing legal and consular assistance to the affected individuals and their families.
The individuals in custody are Purnendu Tiwari, Sugunakar Pakala, Amit Nagpal, and Sanjeev Gupta, holding the rank of Commanders, along with Navtej Singh Gill, Birendra Kumar Verma, and Saurabh Vasisht, who carry the designation of Captains. The eighth individual is Sailor Ragesh Gopakumar. The specific charges against them have not been disclosed to the public.
The Indian Ambassador to Qatar, along with other officials and family members, were present during the proceedings at the Court of Appeal. The government reiterated its steadfast support for the accused, stating that they have been standing by them since the inception of the case and will continue to engage with Qatari authorities on the matter.
The legal saga began in August 2022 when the Indian nationals, employed by Doha-based Dahra Global, were taken into custody. The charges, kept confidential by Qatari authorities, were later reported to be related to alleged spying for Israel.
The appeal filed by the Indian government was accepted in late November, leading to this recent development. Given the sensitive nature of the case, further comments from the Ministry of External Affairs were withheld at this juncture.
