New Delhi: Former judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who decided to join the BJP resigning as High Court judge of Calcutta, justified his jaw-dropping career change citing ‘insulting remarks from Trinamool persons’ as a reason.
In an exclusive interview with NDTV hours after his bombshell decision, Abhijit Gangopadhyay said he suffered insults as he was ‘discovering huge corruption, and trying to ensure justice.’
Gangopadhyay who quite the Calcutta High Court Tuesday afternoon is known for his run-ins with lawyers, judges, and senior leaders with Bengal's Trinamool regime, according to the report.
‘My resignation is the result of insulting remarks by Trinamool persons against me... when I was trying to do justice as I was exploring and discovering huge corruption in education appointments - school teachers and employees in different schools - in the state,’Gangopadhyay was quoted as saying.
Gangopadhyay said he faced personal attacks when he ordered for the CBI investigation; calling ‘Trinamool people’ half-educated, he said they ‘do not know what to say to a judge, but they challenged me.’
The former judge said he got impetus to join politics when Trinamool leaders challenged him to enter into politics and he gave thoughts to it.
‘So now the time has come to stand beside large number of helpless people of our state,’ he was quoted as saying.
When asked about the propriety of the unprecedented move, he said Trinamool persons are raising this question as they know many leaders will be convicted.
Abhijit Gangopadhyay said the BJP is a ‘good platform in Bengal’ where no other parties including CPM or Congress have any influence and the party is raising issues that will strike a chord with the people of Bengal.
