Election Commission advises political parties on campaign conduct

New Delhi: In a recent address, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar issued a firm advisory to political parties, stressing the importance of maintaining decorum and civility during campaigning for the upcoming general elections.

The advisory, aimed at fostering constructive political discourse, outlines several key guidelines for political parties to follow. Kumar emphasized the need for issue-based campaigning, urging parties to focus on relevant topics rather than resorting to divisive tactics.

Furthermore, the advisory strictly prohibits hate speeches, casting of caste or religious appeals, and criticism of any aspect of an individual's private life. Kumar highlighted the significance of past violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) as guidance for conducting civilized and respectful campaigning.

Additionally, parties are urged to refrain from disseminating unverified or misleading advertisements and from masquerading advertisements as news reports. Social media usage is also addressed, with parties cautioned against posting unverified or defamatory content, particularly when targeting opponents.

These guidelines emphasize the importance of inspiring political discourse that unites rather than divides society. Parties are urged to engage in issue-based campaigning, avoiding the use of hate speeches, caste or religious appeals, and criticism of individuals' private lives. Parties are encouraged to conduct civilised campaigning in the upcoming general elections. Parties are also instructed to exercise restraint and avoid vilifying opponents in their posts.

The responsibility for maintaining decorum and civility falls squarely on the campaigners, as they are expected to adhere to these guidelines in their actions and statements.

These advisory measures are aimed at ensuring fair and ethical electoral practices, promoting healthy political discourse, and upholding the integrity of the democratic process.
