ECI sets January 21, 2027 deadline for final voter rolls in select states
New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in states and Union Territories where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has recently concluded or is currently in its third phase. The exercise aims to enrol eligible voters who were left out earlier, as well as first-time electors.
Under the announced timeline, polling stations are to be rationalised or rearranged by November 20, while the integrated draft electoral rolls will be published on November 30. Citizens will then have until December 12 to file claims and objections, and these must be disposed of by January 16, 2027. The final electoral rolls will be published on January 21, 2027.
The revision will be carried out in a phased manner rather than across the country at the same time. The ECI said separate schedules will later be announced for Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Delhi, Tripura and Telangana.
In high-altitude regions such as Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the SSR will be taken up later, considering the cold weather conditions.
The Commission has issued detailed instructions for Booth Level Officers (BLOs), District Election Officers, Electoral Registration Officers and other officials involved in the process. Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) have been directed to issue press notes during the revision period, including information on the weekly sharing of claims and objections with political parties and the procedure for filing appeals.
At the time of final publication, each CEO will also inform the public about the summary of electors’ details and explain the appeal process.
The ECI had earlier, on September 29, directed a special enrolment drive in at least 20 states and Union Territories to register young and first-time eligible voters. The announcement of the new timeline formally sets the process in motion.
