Delhi water supply to normalize soon, Atishi inspects Chandrawal Water Treatment Plant

Delhi Water Minister Atishi conducted an inspection of the Chandrawal Water Treatment Plant on Sunday, following significant flooding caused by unexpected heavy rains that damaged the pumping house and its motors.

Atishi instructed officials to expedite repairs to the pump house and to implement measures to prevent similar issues in the future.

In a Hindi post on 'X' after her visit, she detailed the impact of the rains, which had led to a disruption in the water supply across many parts of Central Delhi.

"Due to the unexpected rains, the pumping house at the Chandrawal Water Treatment Plant was flooded, resulting in motor damage," Atishi explained. "This disrupted water supply in numerous areas of Central Delhi. The Jal Board has responded promptly, and the plant is now almost 80 percent repaired. The water supply will return to normal soon."

She emphasized the importance of preventing such incidents in the future, adding, "I inspected the plant today and directed officials to repair the pump house as quickly as possible. Additionally, a joint inspection should be conducted to ensure that this issue does not recur at any plant."

The national capital experienced severe disruption on Friday morning, with 228.1 mm of rainfall recorded on the first day of monsoon. This was the highest June rainfall since 1936, causing widespread flooding and multiple casualties.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rains in Delhi and has issued an "orange alert" for the city until July 2.
