Delhi Red Fort blast: 15 arrested in Assam for sharing inflammatory social media posts

Assam Police have arrested 15 people across various districts for allegedly posting objectionable and inflammatory content on social media following Monday’s car blast in Delhi, which killed 13 people.

According to police sources, the arrests came after intensive monitoring of online activity aimed at preventing the spread of communal hatred and the glorification of terrorism. The state police have reiterated their commitment to act swiftly against anyone misusing social media to incite violence or disturb public order.

Nine people were arrested on Thursday. They were identified as Rafijul Ali from Bongaigaon, Forid Uddin Laskar from Hailakandi, Inamul Islam and Firuj Ahmed from Lakhimpur, Shahil Shoman Sikdar and Rakibul Sultan from Barpeta, Nasim Akram from Hojai, Taslim Ahmed from Kamrup, and Abdur Rohim Mollah from South Salmara.

Six others — Mattiur Rahman from Darrang, Hassan Ali Mondal from Goalpara, Abdul Latif from Chirang, Wajhul Kamal from Kamrup, and Nur Amin Ahmed from Bongaigaon — were arrested on Wednesday for sharing inflammatory posts related to the blast.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that a total of 15 people have been arrested so far for spreading "provocative and communal" content online.

He stated that the state government would not tolerate any attempt to disturb peace and communal harmony in Assam. The Chief Minister also directed police to continue strict action against such behaviour.

Taking to X, Sarma said, "Assam Police will continue to act swiftly and firmly against anyone misusing social media to spread hatred or glorify terror."

Earlier on Tuesday, a retired government school principal in Cachar district was detained for allegedly making a politically motivated remark about the blast. He was released later after being served a notice.

The police said the arrests are part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order and to ensure that social media is not used to spread misinformation or hatred during sensitive times.
