New Delhi: Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said the residents working from home or using shared transport will curb air pollution in the city by reducing vehicular emissions. Pollution from traffic accounts for 51% of the air pollution in the capital city.
"If possible, please share a ride to work or work from home. This is how we can reduce the share of vehicular emissions in Delhi's air pollution," he told the media. He also asked people not to use coal and firewood for heating. He asserted that air pollution cannot be resolved with politics and needs action from locals.
Speaking against firecrackers, he said: "We have to reduce our share of pollution. We have to do everything we can. We cannot sit idle waiting for others to act. Emission from even one firecracker can cause great harm in such unfavourable meteorological conditions."
The Delhi government is implementing a ban as part of the plan of action to curb air pollution. Rai asked people to take pictures of anyone violating the ban on construction work and upload them on the "Green Delhi" application. 13 pollution hotspots in the city are getting fire tenders to sprinkle water.
