Delhi Court summons two cops in Faizan custodial death case after six years

New Delhi: Six years after the 2020 Delhi pogrom, a court summoned two Delhi Police personnel on Wednesday in connection with the custodial death of 23-year-old Faizan, who was brutally assaulted and forced to sing the national anthem.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mayank Goel took cognisance of a CBI chargesheet against Head Constable Ravinder Kumar and Constable Pawan Yadav, finding sufficient evidence under IPC Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 325 (grievous hurt), and 304(II) (culpable homicide) read with Section 34 (common intention). Both must appear on February 24.

Faizan's death drew outrage after a viral video showed police beating Muslim men, including him, and forcing them to chant patriotic slogans during the anti-CAA riots. His family alleged illegal detention at Jyoti Nagar police station and denial of medical care post-assault at Kardampuri.

The CBI probe followed a Delhi High Court order transferring the case from Delhi Police, which Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani slammed as "tardy and sketchy." The court noted investigators were accused, compromising fairness. Faizan's dying declaration detailed police humiliation targeting his faith and sham hospital treatment dictated by officers. In 2025, another court ordered an FIR against the SHO too.
