Kolkata: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), in a joint operation with West Bengal Police, has arrested an MBBS student of Al-Falah University, Faridabad, in connection with the car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station earlier this week.
The accused, identified as Nisar Alam, was detained from Dalkhola in North Dinajpur district on Friday after investigators tracked his mobile tower location. Alam, whose family has long been settled in Ludhiana, Punjab, had recently travelled to Dalkhola with his mother and sister to attend a family function.
Following his arrest, Alam was taken to Islampur Police Station for interrogation before being shifted to Siliguri in Darjeeling district. Officials indicated he may be brought to Delhi on transit remand later in the day.
Residents of Konal village, where Alam’s ancestral home is located, expressed shock at the development. “Alam and his other family members used to come to Konal from time to time to meet their relatives. We have found him to be an extremely well-mannered and soft-spoken youth. We could never guess about his association with insurgency activities,” a villager told reporters.
Al-Falah University, a private institution in Faridabad, has come under national spotlight after recent revelations of a massive explosives recovery and the Red Fort blast that killed 12 people and injured dozens. Investigators have repeatedly visited the campus in Dhauj, questioning 52 doctors as part of the probe.
Authorities are focusing on three suspects linked to a Jaish-e-Mohammed module, Dr Muzammil Shakeel, Dr Shaheen Shahid, and Dr Umar Mohammed, as the investigation widens.
