The Delhi government has announced a complete ban on the production, sale, and use of firecrackers until January 1, 2025, in a bid to combat rising air pollution levels during the winter season.
Environment Minister Gopal Rai, in a press statement, emphasized that firecrackers contribute significantly to pollution, which typically spikes during the colder months.
Rai explained that the seasonal increase in pollution, combined with the use of firecrackers, poses a serious health risk to residents. "To mitigate this, we are enforcing a complete ban on firecrackers like last year. This includes the prohibition of production, storage, sale, and even online delivery of all kinds of firecrackers," said Rai.
The government is also developing a comprehensive 'Winter Action Plan,' focusing on 21 key areas to control pollution during the season. Rai encouraged citizens to celebrate festivals in an eco-friendly manner by lighting lamps and sharing sweets, rather than setting off fireworks. He called on Delhiites to become "Pollution Warriors" by playing an active role in reducing pollution.
To ensure the strict enforcement of the ban, the Delhi Police, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the Revenue Department will collaborate on an action plan. The government remains committed to protecting the environment and public health through this initiative.
