Imphal: The Manipur Police lost a head constable to a gunshot wound in the Kangpokpi district of the state on Thursday, bringing the total death toll for the day to three.
On Thursday at around 5:30 p.m., Head Constable Lenglam Dimngel, who was assigned to the Leimakhong police station in the Kangpokpi district, was shot and killed while travelling to the village of Haraothel, it has been reported, Indian Express reported.
Two members of the Meitei community were killed in Haraothel, a Kuki village in Kangpokpi, as a result of heavy gunfire throughout the day. This led to rioting in Imphal on Thursday night and the political drama surrounding CM Biren Singh's rumoured resignation on Friday.
A police source claims that on Thursday night, Dimgnel and another head constable were dispatched to the village of Haraothel to collect some items.
“After the firing had ceased, he, along with a colleague, left for Haraothel to gather some items, such as Aadhar cards, which had been left behind after the morning’s incidents. On their way there, he was shot by a stray bullet from the eastern side which hit him on the neck. He died on the spot,” said the source.
