New Delhi: Taking suo moto cognisance of the tragic deaths of civil service aspirants in the flooding of a coaching centre basement in Delhi, the Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Centre and the Delhi government. The court also demanded responses from both, The Times of India reported.
A bench of Justices Surya Kand and Ujjal Bhuyan said that the coaching centres have turned into death chambers.
It said that the centres can operate online unless they fully comply with safety norms and basic standards for a dignified life. Such institutes are jeopardising the lives of aspirants who come from various parts of the country, the bench said.
The court instructed the Centre, as well as the Delhi administration, along with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), to file responses detailing the safety norms that are currently there. It expressed concerns over the safety and well-being of students at coaching centres.
Regarding the tragic incident and the case that followed, the Delhi High Court had transferred its investigation from the Delhi Police to the CBI earlier in a bid to ensure transparency and public confidence.
Those who lost life in the incident include Shreya Yadav (25) from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni (25) from Bihar, and Nevin Delvin (24) from Kerala. Following the incident, students from various coaching centres staged protests demanding enhanced safety measures. They carried out a candlelight march, gathering in front of the coaching centre to honour the deceased, TOI reported.
