Court summons Tihar jail superintendent on Dr. Umer Khalid's complaint

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday summoned Tihar Jail Superintendent on a complaint submitted by scholar and activist Dr. Umer Khalid.

Khalid was virtually produced before Additional Sessions Judge of Karakardooma Court, Delhi on a plea by the police which sought extension of his judicial custody by 30 days.

During the hearing, Khalid complained of inhumane restrictions against him in the jail. He told the judge that the jail authorities are not permitting him to step out of his cell and nobody is allowed to speak to him. He said that the custody was like a solitary confinement.

Upon the complaint, the Court directed the superintendent to be present tomorrow for the virtual hearing.

Court also warned the authorities against punishing the detainee for complaining about them.

The court has adjourned the matter till Friday.

On Thursday, Khalid's lawyer opposed the police's plea for remand and submitted that he was only organising protests against CAA amendment bills.
