Corruption case: CBI court rejects Anil Deshmukh's bail plea

Mumbai: The bail application filed by Nationalist Congress Party leader Anil Deshmukh was rejected by a special court here on Friday. The former Maharashtra home minister was arrested in a case of alleged corruption filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), The Indian Express reported.

The Bombay high court had granted Deshmukh bail earlier this month in another case of money laundering filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Filing the corruption case against Deshmukh, the CBI alleged that bribes were collected from bar owners at his behest by dismissed policeman Sachin Waze. Since the CBI court rejected his bail on Friday, he will have to continue inside the jail.

In his bail plea, the former minister had argued that the CBI has acted in a "partisan and biased" manner and cast doubts on the credentials of the witnesses- including Waze and former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh- cited against him.

The plea mentioned Waze's flip-flop before Justice K U Chandiwal Commission. The state government appointed the commission to probe the allegations made by Singh against Deshmukh.

It was in November 2021 the ED arrested Deshmukh in the money laundering case.
