Cops tear gas farmers ahead of Haryana CM's visit to Karnal

New Delhi: Reports emerge of police firing tear gas on protesting farmers near a turnpike at Haryana's Karnal Sunday.

The incident took place ahead of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar's visit to a village in the neigbourhood.

According to NDTV, mobile phone footage showed police shooting tear gas, water cannons at farmers for trying to enter Kemla village here.

The Chief Minister according to the report will speak of the benefits of the farm laws to the farmers gathering in the village.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed here ahead of the meeting.

Haryana, a BJP ruled state, had earlier tried to stop farmers going across the state to Delhi.

This led to farmers reportedly clashing with the police as they surged onward to their destination.

Over the course of the protest, the Central government had planned outreach programmes as part of dispelling "misconceptions" about the laws.

Reports today indicate that Haryana CM could wax lyrical about the benefits of the farms laws.
