Congress will unite India as Gandhiji did against injustice: Rahul

Bengaluru: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth 153rd anniversary on Sunday, before starting his Bharat Jodo Yatra's 3rd in Karnataka. Rahul said that the Congress would unite India like Gandhiji united the country against injustice, IANS reported.

Rahul visited the Khadi Gramodyog Centre at Badanavalu in Nanjangud and spent some time in contemplation there. The place has had historical significance since the Father of the Nation visited it in 1927.

Rahul tweeted early on Sunday in Hindi that Gandhiji taught us to walk the path of truth and non-violence.

"He taught us the meaning of love, mercy, harmony, and humanity. Today, on Gandhi Jayanti, we swear that just as he united the country against injustice, we shall unite the country," Rahul said.

He included Mahatma Gandhi's one video montage and visuals from Bharat Jodo Yatra in his Twitter post.

Rahul's Bharat Jodo Yatra started from Kanyakumari on September 7. It has traversed Tamil Nadu and Kerala and entered Karnataka on Friday. Over three weeks, he is to walk 500 km in the state as part of the Yatra.

Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged people to shun violence as his message for the International Day of Non-Violence, Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. He said that the world needs to follow Gandhiji's principles of Ahimsa (non-violence).

The UN chief said in his tweet, "On the International Day of Non-Violence, we celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's birthday & values of peace, respect & the essential dignity shared by everyone. We can defeat today's challenges by embracing these values & working across cultures & borders to build a better future."
