Bengaluru: The ruling Congress in Karnataka on Monday named former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar as a candidate in the upcoming Karnataka legislative council bypolls along with State Minister and Congress national secretary N S Boseraju and Tippannappa Kamaknoor.

The MLC elections in the state are scheduled to be held on June 30.

Shettar, a Lingayat leader, quit the BJP and joined the Congress after he was denied the party ticket to contest the elections. He contested the polls from Hubballi Dharwad Central seat on a Congress ticket but lost the recent Assembly election.

The three MLC seats fell vacant following the resignation of three BJP leaders Baburao Chinchansur, R Shankar and Laxman Savadi, after the party denied them tickets to contest the Assembly polls.

Shettar headed the BJP government as Chief Minister for 10 months from July 12, 2012, to May 2013. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition and Assembly Speaker.
