Congress MLA in MP joins BJP; 3rd to switch since model code declared

Bhopal: Nirmala Sapre, a Congress MLA from Madhya Pradesh, joined BJP on Sunday, becoming the third Congress leader in the state to join the saffron party since the elections Model Code of Conduct came into effect, PTI reported.

The Model Code of Conduct for the ongoing Lok Sabha polls was announced in March.

Sapre joined the BJP in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav during a public rally at Rahatgarh in the state's Sagar district.

She told reporters later she had made several promises to the people she represents but wasn't able to fulfil them. She claimed that the Congress party is out of power and does not have any agenda for development.

"I joined the stream of development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav," she said.

It was on March 16 that the Election Commission of India announced the Lok Sabha poll dates. The Congress MLA from Amarwara in Chhindwara district quit the party and joined BJP on March 29. On April 30, Congress MLA Ramniwas Rawat also quit the party to join BJP.

It was only on Saturday that the former Congress chief in Delhi, Arvinder Singh Lovely, joined the BJP. He had left the party days ago, citing Congress' alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He reasoned that despite AAP accusing Congress of corruption, they allied with them, The Times of India reported.

Lovely claimed that he had full hope, and there is no doubt that the BJP-forming government at the Centre will have an overwhelming majority, and the saffron party's flag will fly in Delhi, too, in the coming days.
