Congress is "Worth Reforming And Reviving," says Shashi Tharoor

New Delhi: As Congress' top brass discussed the defeat at the polls, Shashi Tharoor pointed out that the party has the most MLAs in the country in Opposition, arguing it ought to be "reformed and revived".

Mr Tharoor tweeted a list of how many MLAs each party has in the county.

Based on the list he shared, the Congress has more than 750 legislators, second only to the BJP with over 1,400 legislators.

Despite the recent 111 seat win of the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, this list did not include it, although some of its member parties had fewer than 100 legislators.

''This is why inc india remains by far the most credible of the national opposition parties. It's also why it's worth reforming & reviving,'' he explained.

It lost Punjab to the AAP, couldn't recapture Uttarakhand, Goa or Manipur from the BJP, and had a poor showing in the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh.

On Sunday, Congress' Working Committee held a meeting to discuss the results of the assembly elections in five states, as the opposition party feels the sting of yet another electoral failure.

In the wake of the crushing defeat in the assembly elections, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had said that it was time to reaffirm the idea of India which the party stands for and reform the party's organisational leadership in a way that will reignite those ideas and inspire the people.

In an open letter to party chief Sonia Gandhi, Mr Tharoor, who was part of the Group of 23, said, "Change is unavoidable if the party is to succeed."\
