New Delhi: The Delhi unit Chief of the Congress resigned from the post on Sunday citing the party’s alliance with Aam Admi Party( AAP), NDTV reported.
Arvinder Singh Lovely in a letter to Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge pointed out that nevertheless several AAP ministers have been jailed in corruption charges, the Congress formed alliance with the outfit.
Lovely added that he found no reason to continue as the party’s unit chief as he cannot protect the interests of the Delhi Congress workers.
"The Delhi Congress Unit was against an alliance with a party (AAP) which was formed on the sole basis of leveling false, fabricated and malafide corruption charges against the Congress. Despite that, the party made a decision to ally with the AAP in Delhi," he was quoted as saying.
Alongside, he accused the party of choosing candidates who are ‘total strangers’ to the Congress unit, to represent the party in the Lok Sabha polls.
It is reported that he was referring to the candidature of Udit Raj in North-west Delhi and Kanhaiya Kumar in Northeast Delhi.
The high command’s decision to field both these candidates reportedly led to friction among party leaders in the capital city.
Illustrating the gravity of the situation in the Delhi unit of the Congress, NDTV reported citing sources: “Several Delhi leaders are also planning to join the BJP or form a new party if their issues are not resolved.”
Arvinder Singh Lovely became the Delhi Congress President in August last year.
Earlier this year, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress arrived at a 4:3 seat-sharing agreement for Delhi to put up a joint fight in the Lok Sabha elections.
