Congress Delhi president, 2 councillors join AAP

New Delhi: The Congress' Delhi unit vice-president Ali Mehdi and its two newly elected councillors from MCD polls joined the Aam Aadmi Party on Friday, PTI reported.

At a press conference, AAP leader Durgesh Pathak said they decided to join his party after seeing the work done by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Two of the Councillors are Sabila Begum and Nazia Khatoon.

Sabila Begum won from ward number 243, Mustafabad, and Nazia Khatoon won from ward number 245, Brij Puri. The Congress managed to win nine seats in the recent MCD polls.

The fact is that the anti-defection laws do not apply to the MCD polls.

Mehdi said that he wanted to join AAP because he wanted development in his area.

He said, "We have decided to join the AAP after seeing the development work done by Mr Kejriwal. We want development in our area. Under the leadership of Mr Kejriwal, the AAP party is working hard to develop the capital."

The sweeping victory of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Delhi MCD polls ends the 15-year rule of the BJP in the city.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led party bagged 134 of the 250 wards, while the BJP won 104. Counting for the 250 wards of the civic agency began at 8 a.m. on Wednesday amid tight security arrangements at 42 centres. There were a total of 1,349 candidates in the fray.
