New Delhi: Citing multiple security breaches in Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Congress party in a letter to Union Home minister Amit Shah has sought proper protection for party leader Rahul Gandhi during the march.
In the letter, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal pointed out that the security of the Yatra was compromised on multiple times after the march entered Delhi.
Further, the letter stated that the Delhi Police, remaining a “mute spectator”, has completely failed in controlling the surging crowd and maintaining a perimeter around Shri Rahul Gandhi, who is assigned Z+ Security.
It added that due to the lack of security, the party workers have to form a security perimeter around Rahul Gandhi.
Previously Congress alleged that the Intelligence Bureau is questioning people who took part in the Rahul Gandhi led march.
“Every citizen has a constitutional right to move throughout India's territory. Bharat Jodo Yatra is a foot march to bring peace and harmony to the country. The government should not indulge in vindictive politics and should ensure the safety and security of the Congress leaders," said the letter.
By pointing out the sacrifices made by Congress leaders such as Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi for the unity of the country, the letter sought better protection for Rahul Gandhi as the march is scheduled to enter Punjab and Jammu Kashmir as per it’s trajectory.
"Moving forward, Bharat Jodo Yatra is slated to enter the sensitive state of Punjab and J&K in the next phase starting from January 3, 2022. In this regard, I request you to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of Shri Rahul Gandhi, a Z+ protectee, and of all the Bharat Yatris and leaders joining the Bharat Jodo Yatra," it said.
