Centre issues eviction orders to slum clusters near PM’s residence

New Delhi: The Centre on Thursday initiated steps to clear three slum clusters located on Race Course Road in New Delhi, close to the Prime Minister’s residence, by issuing rehabilitation notices to residents. The move affects households in Bhai Ram Camp, Masjid Camp and DID Camp, which- according to the issued notice- are situated on government land under the Land and Development Office (L&DO) of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), The Indian Express reported.

According to the notice issued by the L&DO, residents have been directed to vacate their dwellings by March 6 and take possession of flats allotted to them at the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) Colony in Savda Ghevra, approximately 45 kilometres from their current location. The notice warns that failure to comply could result in legal action.

Sources said 717 households have been deemed eligible for rehabilitation and allotted alternative accommodation. The Prime Minister’s official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, lies a few kilometres from the clusters. Although the New Delhi Municipal Council renamed Race Course Road as Lok Kalyan Marg in 2016, official L&DO records continue to reference the former name for these settlements.

The relocation follows a joint survey conducted in January 2024 by the L&DO and the Delhi Development Authority to assess residents’ eligibility under DUSIB’s rehabilitation policy. Based on the survey findings, authorities decided to shift residents to Savda Ghevra.

However, the rehabilitation process has been contested in the Delhi High Court. A prior notice issued on October 29, 2025, was challenged by residents in November. On November 13, the court directed the government to file its response and ordered that the petitioners should not be evicted without adherence to procedural safeguards. During the subsequent hearing on January 13, the government sought additional time to respond. The matter is now scheduled for May 13, with the interim protection against eviction remaining in force until then.
