CBI Special Director elected to executive committee of Interpol

CBI Special Director Praveen Sinha has been elected as a delegate for Asia on the executive committee of the Interpol, official sources informed on Thursday. This is the result of India's intense and well-coordinate campaign across the world, they added. The election to various positions at the Interpol (International Criminal Police Organisation) was conducted at the ongoing 89th Interpol General Assembly in Istanbul. The police organisation brings together police forces from about 190 countries and tackles trans-national crimes and terrorism.

"This was a tough election with India running against four other contestants from China, Singapore, Republic of Korea and Jordan for two posts," said a source.

The support of friendly countries was sought during bilateral engagements at different levels. Furthermore, Indian embassies and high commissions worldwide followed up on the matter with their host government to ensure the election of Sinha.

"Today's victory is the result of an intense and well-coordinated election campaign across the world," the source said.

In order to garner support for Sinha, the Indian ambassador in Turkey camped in Istanbul for the past few days. He held on-the-ground bilateral meetings with delegations as well. India will continue to actively contribute to Interpol's aims and objectives and to enhance its effectiveness through professional competence and experience, the source added.
