The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated polygraph tests on the primary accused and six others involved in the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Sanjay Roy, the main suspect, is undergoing the lie detector test at the prison where he is currently held. The other six individuals, including former principal Sandip Ghosh, four doctors on duty during the incident, and a civil volunteer, will be tested at the CBI office.
A team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi has been sent to Kolkata specifically to conduct these polygraph tests.
The CBI has informed the Supreme Court that evidence at the crime scene may have been deliberately tampered with before the agency took over the investigation.
The crime occurred on the night of August 8-9.
According to CBI sources, the victim had dinner around midnight with two first-year postgraduate trainees. Afterward, they moved to a seminar room to watch Neeraj Chopra's javelin event at the Tokyo Olympics.
Around 2:00 am, the two trainees left the seminar room, but the victim chose to stay behind. An intern on the third floor claimed to have remained in a nearby interns' room.
At approximately 9:30 am, one of the trainees who had dined with the victim checked on her before ward rounds began, only to find her body.
The Kolkata Police reported that the trainee found the victim "in a motionless state from a distance" and immediately alerted his colleagues and senior doctors, who then informed hospital authorities.
The CBI's investigation has revealed significant evidence, including fingerprints of two of the four doctors in the seminar room where the body was found.
CCTV footage from the hospital has been crucial in establishing the timeline of events. It captured Sanjay Roy entering the college at 1:03 am on the night of the crime. Notably, he was seen with a Bluetooth earphone around his neck, similar to one found at the crime scene.
The case has sparked widespread protests across India, with particularly strong demonstrations in Kolkata. In response, the Supreme Court has ordered the deployment of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel to the hospital to enhance security around the institution.
