In response to recent incidents of religious intolerance and attacks on educational institutions, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has issued comprehensive guidelines for all educational institutions under its jurisdiction, emphasizing its firm stand not to teach or impose Christian practices on students of other religions, spanning approximately 14,000 schools, 650 colleges, and several other institutions.
The CBCI's directives aim to address the emerging challenges posed by socio-cultural, religious, and political tensions in the country, according to a report in The Indian Express.
One of the central recommendations put forth by the CBCI is the promotion of religious and cultural sensitivity within educational settings. The guidelines stress the importance of respecting all faiths and traditions, urging institutions not to impose Christian practices on students of other religions. Instead, the CBCI suggests fostering an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated and respected.
To reinforce these principles, the CBCI recommends practical measures such as reciting the Preamble to the Constitution during daily morning assemblies. This serves to instil constitutional values and awareness among students, regardless of their religious background. Additionally, the guidelines propose the establishment of an "inter-religious prayer room" on school premises, providing a space for students of various faiths to practice their beliefs.
In light of recent attacks and protests targeting educational institutions affiliated with the Christian community, the CBCI underscores the importance of enhancing security measures. Suggestions include implementing physical security measures like locked doors, entryway security systems, visitor check-in procedures, and surveillance cameras to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Father Maria Charles SDB, national secretary of CBCI, emphasized the need for heightened sensitivity in Catholic schools, especially given the diverse backgrounds of students and staff. He stressed that these guidelines serve as a reminder of the values Catholic institutions uphold, including inclusivity and respect for diversity.
Moreover, the guidelines encourage the display of photos depicting prominent Indian figures such as freedom fighters, scientists, poets, and national leaders, aiming to foster a sense of national pride and unity among students. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of promoting patriotism and secular values within educational environments.
Father Charles reiterated that while the guidelines primarily target Catholic institutions, they apply to all schools, colleges, and vocational institutions under the church's umbrella. He emphasized the collaborative effort undertaken to develop these guidelines, involving input from school principals and national coordinators of major religious congregations.
