Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party will further its prospects in the northeast winning majority seats in Tripura and Nagaland alongside biting off a large chunk of Meghayala, exit polls say.
The BJP is highly likely to come to power in Nagaland with its ally NDPP (Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party), while bagging at least six seats in Meghalaya up from two seats last time.
The aggregate posting of exit polls suggest compared to 2018 in Tripura the BJP will put up a lackluster performance.
This time round the BJP will win 32 seats in Tripura just one point above the majority mark in the 60-seat Assembly, where last time BJP comfortably gained majority with 36 seats.
Despite those numbers last time, the BJP formed alliance with IPFT (Indigenous Progressive Front of Tripura) to stabilize its position with eight more seats contributed by IPFT, lest any BJP MLAs crossed over to the opposition.
Ahead of polls this time, the BJP tried to ‘build a rapport’ with newly entrant regional party Tipra Motha.
The BJP’s overtures to bring in its fold a stronger ally did not work after the party declared it is against dividing Tripura.
Now the exit polls show that Tipra Motha, floated by erstwhile royal Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, is likely to win 12 seats.
The Left, after ruling Tripura for 30 years, will get only 15 seats despite forging an alliance with the Congress, to which the Grand Old Party is not going to contribute anything.
The exit polls for Meghalaya suggest a tight fight for the state as Conrad Sangma’s NPP ( National People’s Party) will emerge as single largest party, according to a report in NDTV.
The BJP will add a few more seats increasing its tally from two to six this time, and the congress will bag six seats while Trinamool Congress is likely to get 11 seats.
Exit polls suggest that the BJP-NDPP alliance in Nagaland will win 42 seats comfortably past the majority mark of 31. The NPF will be tied to six seats and the Congress in one.
