BJP trying to create 2002 Gujarat episodes in the state: Assam Opposition MLA

Dispur : Assam Opposition MLA Akhil Gogoi accused the BJP of trying to recreate what he said the 2002 Gujarat episodes in the state, The Scroll reported.

The 2002 Gujarat episodes refers to the communal riots in the state that killed more than 1,000 persons, mostly Muslims, after 59 people were killed when a train coach carrying kar servaks was set on fire.

Gogoi’s reaction came amid reports that some outfits have allegedly threatened Miya Muslims, which refers to Muslims of Bengali origin, from Upper Assam to leave the administrative division.

It is reported that “Miya Muslims” are often falsely accused of being “illegal immigrants”

An independent MLA for the Sivasagar constituency, Gogoi said the BJP desires to create a ‘situation of instability and conflict in Assam’ to win elections in the state, adding that ‘We are well aware of those in Assam who are following the diktats of the BJP agenda.’

The community came under the threat following the alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Assam’s Nagaon district on August 22.

A 24-year-old Tafazul Islam included the three accused in the case.

Subsequently, the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union declared a movement in the Sivasagar district, which is part of Upper Assam, to driving out the community.

Reports said members of the students’ union visited houses in areas such as Nazira in the district to confirm if Muslims with “doubtful citizenship” lived there, the scroll reported citing Northeast Live.

“We have already sent a seven-day ultimatum to Muslims of migrant origin to vacate their rented houses and leave Sibsagar at the earliest,” members of the All Tai Ahom Students Union reportedly said.

They also urged landlord and owners of brick kilns where they worked not to ‘entertain them any further’ .

They also reportedly said that the students’ union and 30 other outfits in the area will intensify protest if ‘necessary action’ is not taken against ‘illegal migrants’ with in next seven days.

Meanwhile, video on Facebook showed members of the students’ outfit threatening Muslims to leave the district, according to the report.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier said after the alleged gang rape that a section of society emboldened to commit crimes after the Lok Sabha elections.

Sarma also claimed that indigenous communities are in fear in places where they are a numeric minority.
