Activists of the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena suffered gunshots from BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad from Kalyan West inside a Hill Line police station in Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra after an altercation turned violent on Friday night.
Gaikwad and his two associates were arrested by Thane police for firing at Mahesh Gaikwad, the Kalyan city president of the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena, and a fellow party activist, Rahul Patil.
Initial investigations suggest that the dispute stemmed from a property-related issue. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Sudhakar Pathare, the altercation escalated, resulting in gunfire inside the police station's senior inspector's cabin.
Both Mahesh and Patil sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. They are currently undergoing medical care.
The police have taken action, arresting Ganpat Gaikwad, Harshal Nana Kene, and Sandeep Anant Sarvankar in connection with the incident. However, the authorities are still on the lookout for three additional suspects believed to be involved.
While the motive behind the altercation is yet to be conclusively determined, investigators are exploring multiple angles, including potential political rivalry or personal conflicts between the involved parties.
Statement recordings from eyewitnesses and analysis of CCTV footage from the scene are underway to piece together the exact sequence of events leading up to the violent confrontation.
