BJP leader’s remarks urging women to have more children spark backlash

A leader of BJP has triggered controversy after making remarks urging women to have more children and using derogatory language targeting Muslims.

Udita Tyagi, regional secretary of the party’s Mahila Morcha in western Uttar Pradesh, made the comments while speaking to reporters at PVS Mall in Meerut. Her remarks, which included references to “breeding” and survival, have drawn widespread criticism and concern over communal rhetoric in public discourse.

"Whether it is nine children or four, if a situation arises where my children’s throats are being slit, and I have neither children nor weapons in my home, I will not survive. This is simply a practical calculation," she said.

Tyagi said women should consider having three or four children, framing it as a “practical calculation” for survival in a hypothetical situation of violence. When asked to clarify her earlier comments, she used offensive language and explicitly referred to Muslims while making her remarks.

"If I have four children, then they will stand by me to fight, and there will be a greater chance for my survival. So this is now a game of possibilities," she added.

When asked to clarify, she said: "The jihadist pigs on the other side, the ones breeding like swine, who else could it be? How much more clarity is needed? I am talking about Muslims."

Videos of her statements have circulated widely on social media, prompting backlash from various quarters.

The comments have intensified concerns about rising communal rhetoric, with critics calling for accountability over statements that target religious communities.
