BJP names ex-BPF leader Biswajit Daimary as Rajya Sabha candidate

On Monday, the BJP named Biswajit Daimary, former Rajya Sabha MP from Bodoland People's Front (BPF) who quit his Rajya Sabha seat to join the BJP, as their candidate for the by-election to the Rajya Sabha from Assam. The by-election was required because of his resignation, soon after his re-election in 2020, following embitterment between BJP and BPF. Daimary, elected thrice since 2008, chose the BJP.

The BJP, BPS and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) formed a coalition government in the state after the assembly elections of 2016. However, the relationship between BJP and BPF turned sour, and the BJP has decided to not ally with BPF in the upcoming Assembly polls.

Biswajit's victory is guaranteed as the BJP enjoys a majority in the state assembly.
