Patna: Bihar BJP MLA Mishri Lal Yadav on Saturday announced his resignation from the party, alleging that Dalits and other backward communities were not receiving their due within the organisation.
Representing the Alinagar constituency in Darbhanga district, Yadav told a press conference that he would submit his resignation to the party’s State unit president, Dilip Jaiswal.
The BJP did not immediately respond to his announcement. Sources, however, indicated that Yadav was upset over speculations that he might not be considered for a ticket in the upcoming elections, with the party reportedly considering singer Maithili Thakur as its candidate from Alinagar.
"I won Alinagar for the NDA for the first time. In the past, many candidates with deep pockets and muscle power had failed to do so," Yadav said. He had contested the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections on a ticket from the Vikassheel Insan Party (VIP).
The VIP, headed by Bollywood set designer-turned-politician Mukesh Sahni, ceased to be an NDA constituent in 2022 after its founder was expelled from the Nitish Kumar cabinet at the BJP’s instance. Shortly thereafter, all four VIP MLAs, including Yadav, joined the BJP.
Yadav did not disclose his immediate political plans but is understood to be in touch with the opposition INDIA bloc, led by the RJD.
