Bihar hooch tragedy: Delhi police arrests 1 person

New Delhi: In the case of a fake liquor tragedy in Bihar's Saran, Delhi Police's Crime Branch arrested a man. The tragedy had claimed 73 people, IANS reported citing an official's account.

The accused, identified as Ram Babu Mahto, is a resident of Doila village in Saran district.

The Special Commissioner of Police (Crime), Ravindra Singh Yadav, said that the Inter-State Cell of the Crime Branch sent information that Mahto may be hiding somewhere in Delhi.

"On the basis of technical surveillance as well as specific inputs, Mahto was nabbed from Dwarka," Yadav said.

He added, "Appropriate legal action is being taken, and information about the arrest of the accused has been shared with Bihar Police for further action."

There is a prohibition of liquor in Bihar, and the same has prompted the accused to make quick and easy money by manufacturing and selling spurious liquor, the police said.

In April 2016, Bihar enacted a complete ban on the sale and use of alcohol in the state, a decision that attracted a sizable number of female voters who were frequently perceived as being victims of domestic violence at the hands of drunk males.

However, the state continues to see fatalities brought on by the consumption of locally produced fake liquor and black market sales of alcohol.

Family members of the deceased in Chhapra alleged that their loved ones passed away as a result of drinking poisonous alcohol. The incident happened in the Doila village of the Isuapur police station area and Yadu Mor of the Mashrak police station area.
