Bihar: Doctor Nusrat Parveen reports for duty weeks after veil controversy

Patna: Ayush doctor Nusrat Parveen, who became the center of controversy last month after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar removed her niqab during an appointment letter distribution ceremony, joined her posting on Wednesday.

Government Tibbi College and Hospital principal Mahfoozur Rahman confirmed that Parveen reported for duty at the Patna Civil Surgeon Office on January 7, the final day of the extended joining deadline. "She will be posted suitably by the civil surgeon's office," Rahman said.

The joining deadline had been extended twice—first until December 31, 2025, and subsequently to January 7, 2026. Parveen, who studied at the college where Rahman serves as principal, had not joined within the original timeframe, fueling speculation about her intentions.

Earlier reports suggested that Parveen initially refused to join out of "resentment" over the incident, though the college administration denied these claims. Rahman said Parveen continues to visit the college and they speak occasionally, though not specifically about the joining issue.

When Parveen missed the original deadline last month, Rahman had stated that her family wished to avoid media attention and that she would reconsider whether to join. The Patna Civil Surgeon could not be reached for comment on her posting assignment.
