Bangladesh has expressed strong objections to remarks made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee concerning its internal affairs.
The Bangladeshi government conveyed its concerns to the Indian High Commission, criticizing Banerjee's comments as provocative and inaccurate.
Over the weekend, Banerjee commented on the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, suggesting she would welcome people seeking refuge in West Bengal.
She invoked the United Nations Resolution on refugees to support her stance, stating, "I should not be speaking on the affairs of Bangladesh since that is a sovereign nation and whatever needs to be said on the issue is a subject matter of the Centre. But I can tell you this, if helpless people come knocking on the doors of Bengal, we will surely provide them shelter."
Her remarks were made during a rally in Kolkata.
Bangladesh has disputed Banerjee's characterization of the situation, arguing that it does not align with the conditions described in the UN resolution.
They also warned that her statements, particularly about offering refuge, could lead to increased tensions and potentially be exploited by terrorists and other malicious actors.
