Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam continued to worsen on Saturday, with a death toll of three and over 4 lakh people affected across 15 districts, according to an official bulletin.
The state's rivers remained swollen, causing widespread devastation. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that a man in Nalbari district lost his life, bringing the total number of fatalities to three.
The Brahmaputra River was flowing above the danger mark at Tezpur and Nematighat in Jorhat, posing a significant threat to nearby areas.
According to the report, a total of 407,771 individuals, including 167,538 women and 53,119 children, were reeling under the impact of the floods.
The districts affected include Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Chirang, Darrang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Tamulpur.
Among the affected districts, Bajali suffered the most, with 221,580 people affected, followed by Nalbari with 40,068 and Lakhimpur with 22,060.
To provide relief to the affected population, a total of 220 relief camps have been established, accommodating 81,352 individuals. Additionally, relief distribution centres have been set up, with the highest numbers in Bajali and Nalbari.
The floodwaters have submerged 1,118 villages and damaged 8,469.56 hectares of crop areas across Assam. A total of 964 animals were washed away during the day, while 4,10,055 others have been affected.
Around four embankments have been breached or damaged in districts such as Darrang, Nalbari, Golaghat, Kamrup, and Biswanath.
Furthermore, 157 roads and a bridge in Dhubri have been damaged, hampering transportation and connectivity.
In Karimganj district, heavy rainfall triggered landslides, adding to the challenges faced by the region, the report said. Landslides have been reported from Karimganj district following heavy rainfall, the report said.
The authorities are actively working to provide assistance and support to the affected individuals, while rescue and relief operations continue amid the ongoing flood crisis in Assam.
