Deoghar (Jharkhand): In a daring daylight heist, armed robbers looted more than Rs 1 crore in cash and jewellery from an HDFC Bank branch in Madhupur, Deoghar district, on Monday, police said.
The incident took place between 12.45 p.m. and 1 p.m. at the bank’s Rajbari Road branch, sending panic across the busy Madhupur Bazaar area.
According to witnesses, two men wearing helmets and burqas first entered the bank before being joined by four others. Brandishing pistols, the gang threatened employees and customers, seized their phones to block calls for help, and assaulted those who resisted.
For nearly 20 minutes, the robbers packed cash, gold coins and valuables into bags. They also managed to access lockers, escaping with jewellery worth several lakhs. Before leaving, they shut the main shutter from outside, allowing them to flee unnoticed.
Police teams rushed to the spot after being alerted. Superintendent of Police Kumar Saurabh later arrived, forming a special investigation team to track the culprits. CCTV footage from the bank and nearby areas is being analyzed, and raids have been launched at suspected hideouts.
Though officials have yet to confirm the exact figure, preliminary estimates suggest the value of the loot exceeds Rs 1 crore.
The high-profile robbery has raised fresh concerns about bank security in the region.
