New Delhi: Afzal Ansari, an MP for the Bahujan Samaj Party, has also been found guilty in the same 2007 Gangsters Act case as his brother Mukhtar Ansari and given a four-year prison sentence. This comes just hours after an MP MLA court in Uttar Pradesh found convicted gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari and sentenced him to ten years in prison.
Additionally, Mukhtar Ansari and Afzal Ansari, each received fines of 5 lakh rupees from the court. The brothers were accused of kidnapping and murder in connection with the death of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai.
As a result of the conviction, Afzal Ansari will no longer be a member of the Lok Sabha, as per the norms of the legislature, any member who receives a term of two years or more in prison is immediately disqualified, NDTV reported.
Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, recently lost his MP designation in accordance with the same regulation after he was found guilty in a defamation case in 2019 and given a two-year prison sentence.
The wife of late BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai, who was reportedly killed in Ghazipur in 2005 by Mukhtar Ansari and his brother Afzal Ansari, stated earlier today that she believes in the judiciary.
"I believe in the judiciary. Rule of Goondas, Mafias have ended (in the state)," Alka Rai said.
