Posters of 'Nirma washing powder' with BJP leaders appear in Guwahati as PM Modi arrives in Assam

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Assam on Friday to inaugurate the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Guwahati and to announce three other medical colleges in the state during his one-day visit on the occasion of ‘Rongali Bihu’.

Ahead of the PM’s visit, posters of washing powder Nirma appeared in Guwahati’s Rajiv Bhawan area. Rajiv Bhawan is the Assam Congress headquarters.

The images of the ‘Nirma girl’ were seen morphed with the faces of BJP leaders like Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Narayan Rane, Suvendu Adhikari, Sujana Chowdhary, Eshwarappa among others, who joined the saffron party from other parties.

The poster had "Welcome PM Modi to Assam" written on it. The Dispur police reached the spot and removed the poster placed on GS Road.

The Congress had earlier taken a swipe at the BJP with a play on the washing powder advertisement catchphrase. The party alleged that the BJP state governments have become nothing but "double washing machine" dispensations where "previous sins" are cleansed.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh earlier posted a graphic of the washing powder advertisement on Twitter with the caption "Doodh si safedi BJP se aaye, kalankit neta bhi khil khil jaye (BJP brings such milk-like whiteness, even tainted leaders also appear sparkling).

The Congress had hit out at the BJP for supporting a government led by Sangma in Meghalaya, saying a few days back his dispensation was considered the "most corrupt" by the top BJP leadership and now the party is joining hands with him.

A similar poster was put up by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Hyderabad in a sarcastic welcome to Union Home Minister Amit Shah who was in the city for the 54th CISF Raising Day parade.

The poster in Hyderabad attacking BJP come amid ongoing questioning of BRS MLC and CM K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter K Kavitha in the Delhi liquor case.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also called took a dig at BJP during her dharna on March 30th, by bringing a 'BJP washing machine' on the protest stage. She had urged all Opposition parties to fight unitedly in the 2024 general elections.
