Critically acclaimed Israeli television show Fauda is set to get an Indian adaptation with SonyLiv. Developed by Chameli fame director Sudhir Mishra, the show will be set in 2017 Kashmir.
Applause Entertainment has released the official synopsis of the Indian adaptation named Tanaav. It will portray the story of a Special Covert Ops Unit in Kashmir in 2017. The bravery and courage of the soldiers are in focus. The show will also explore the human drama behind the ideologies while dealing with complex emotions and flawed characters. It is a socio-political action drama with family at its core.
Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra said Applause Entertainment discover some of the best International stories to be reimagined and adapted for Indian audiences. He added that the show allowed him to delve deep into the psyche of many characters.
Co-creator of Fauda Avi Issacharoff said his team is very happy and proud to hear about the Indian adaptation. He added that it is an honour for him to learn his show has touched the hearts of international audiences, especially in India, reported The Indian Express.
Fauda was internationally streamed on Netflix and it already has three seasons. The New York Times had voted it among the best international shows of 2017. The next year, it took home 11 Israeli TV Academy Awards including best screenplay. In late 2020, a fourth season was announced.
The Israeli show is developed by Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff inspired by their own experiences in the Israel Defense Forces. The first season focused on a retired commander returning to duty to pursue a Hamas terrorist whom he thought to have killed. The third season of the show takes place in the Gaza Strip.
However, The Guardian columnist Rachel Shabi criticised the Fauda for its politics. Similarly, Yasmeen Serhan's review on The Atlantic said the viewers are deprived of a Palestinian perspective on the conflict. Al Jazeera's Yara Hawari called the show racist and dangerous in its "subtlety and slick presentation". George Zeidan of Right to Movement Palestine criticised Fauda for "dangerous propaganda".
Tanaav will have 12 episodes and stars Manav Vij, Arbaaz Khan, Arslan Goni, Ekta Kaul and Sumit Kaul. The release date is not yet announced.
