Chandigarh: The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are joining hands in the Chandigarh Mayoral elections, Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal said. The two parties will contest together in the polls, reports Asian News International.
The two parties have agreed that AAP will contest for the mayor's post while Congress will contest the remaining two posts.
Bansal told ANI that the Lok Sabha elections are later, but there are corporation elections. As per the agreed arrangement, the result will be a success for the INDIA bloc, with a good majority.
He said that AAP and Congress have an agreement on national issues, and the parties had meetings.
"At this time, everyone has gathered together to save the feelings of democracy," ANI quoted Bansal.
In the Chandigarh Mayor elections, 35 councillors will vote, and at present, BJP has the support of 14 councillors while AAP has 13 and Congress 7. Shiromani Akali Dal also has representation with one councillor.
For the majority, 18 councillor votes are required.
This alliance comes when AAP and Congress are to contest together along with other parties in the INDIA bloc in the Lok Sabha polls 2024. Earlier, Mallikarjun Kharge and Arvind Kejriwal- chiefs of the two parties- met in Delhi. At the meeting held at the residence of Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha were also present. The two parties intended to share seats in Delhi, Punjab, Goa, and Haryana.
On Sunday, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj congratulated Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge for being named as the "chairperson" of the India bloc.
