Aaftab Poonawala plays reads Paul Theroux travelogue in the jail

New Delhi: Aaftab Amin Poonawala, accused of murdering his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar, is now reading a bestselling travel book in jail.

Upon his request for an English novel, the Tihar jail authorities gave him a copy of 'The Great Railway Bazaar' by American novelist Paul Theroux, according to news agency ANI.

The book was chosen as it was not based on crime thus not to further incite Aaftab, who appears to have good reading habits, to harm himself or others.

Police say that Aaftab is fond of chess and plays against himself when two fellow inmates are not there to sit on the other end.

Sources in the jail reportedly said he is a seasoned player who strategizes moves and plays from both ends.

The undertrials sharing the cell with him are accused in the theft. It is reported that they have been asked to keep watch on Aaftab.

The Delhi Police have been baffled by the "good behaviours" of Aaftab in the jail abiding by everything that the police asked of him, according to the report.

Alongside taking note of his "obedient" behaviour, police suspect him of making "rehearsed" answers.

"Aaftab's behaviour and good conduct are under question. How can there be one answer to each question? It looks like the accused has already rehearsed the answers," officials reportedly said.

He confessed to the police that he used a Chinese chopper to dismember Shraddha's body.

Meanwhile police are waiting for the DNA report just as it considering to do brain mapping of Aaftab.

When Aaftab started confessing his crime, police suspect it is part of his "devious" scheme and have deployed additional guard outside his cell.

According to jail officials, Aftab, who neither talks much to anyone nor mingles, has no remorse for his actions.
