A moderate earthquake shakes Kashmir

There have been no reported casualties or property damage in Kashmir as a result of a moderately powerful earthquake that struck on Saturday.

More than a moderate magnitude earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck at 6.45 p.m. today, according to a disaster management official.

"The coordinates of the earthquake are latitude 36.55 degrees north and longitude 71.20 degrees east.

There was an earthquake in Afghanistan-Tajikistan region with the epicenter located 216 km under the surface of the earth."

There were reports of the earthquake being felt in some areas of the Valley. Seismologically speaking, Kashmir is a very earthquake-prone region with past temblors that have been disastrous.

A 7.6 Richter ear, earthquake that struck J&K on October 8, 2005, caused the deaths of over 80,000 people on both sides of the Line of Control.
