According to recent data from the Jal Jeevan Mission, approximately 77% of rural households in India now have access to tap water connections.
This translates to about 14.88 crore households out of the total 19.31 crore rural households across the country.
The data reveals that 14,88,16,184 out of 19,31,21,778 rural households have been equipped with tap water connections. Notably, eleven states and Union Territories (UTs) have achieved full coverage in rural areas.
Furthermore, sixteen states and UTs have tap water coverage between 75-100%, while five states have coverage ranging from 50-75%. However, Rajasthan and West Bengal are lagging, with below 50% coverage.
Launched in 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission aims to ensure that every household in rural India has access to safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024.
